Facilitation Skills Training: Legacy of the Past, Shaping the Future

This programme is being delivered as part of our "Dealing with the Past, Shaping the Future" project. It has been devised to enhance the skills of facilitators who are working in projects that have a specific remit to deliver programmes to deal with the past under Peace III monies.  The overall programme will focus on how to facilitate difficult conversations with a diverse range of people who have suffered because of the conflict in Northern Ireland.  These individuals and groups may see themselves as victims or survivors who may be trying to come to terms with the past in dealing with their hurt and trauma of their respective experiences.
Northern Ireland is currently viewed as a post conflict society that is involved in a peace process that has significantly transformed the violence to be less, but the conflict in Northern Ireland is far from over.
The course will look at the many different ways people in other post conflict countries remember, celebrate or commemorate their past. This will include examining the impact of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Programme and the Rwanda's Healing Project.
Other parts of the course will cover the skills needed as a facilitator to deal with sensitive issues, manage own and other emotions, working with a co-facilitator and the importance of dealing with disclosure and the legal aspects of confidentiality.
